2005 Zagat

The 2005 Zagat Survey is out for voting. Zagat is something that some love and some hate; I think it's a perfect counterpoint to traditional critics reviews, and yes, everyone's taste is different so when you open things up to the public you get a mixed message given all the thousands who vote.

Shameless Name Dropping

I have trouble sometimes recognizing my face in the mirror, so I can't confirm or deny it, but the rumor is out there...

"Did you hear that Frances McDormand and Joel Coen were in Schnack on Saturday."

"Breaking news! Just got word from a friend Frances McDormand apparently
yelled out of their car, "the burgers are great!"

Whoever they were, we hope that they enjoyed themselves; the same wish we have for every customer. We figure there is no way we can actually take over the world unless people like the tiny burgers!

TV Time

It's been a few months in the making. Tonight, if the tea leaves we call TV Guide, are correct the episode of Cookin' In Brooklyn called "Opening Night" will air.  It's the story of Schnack!

Party Time

In like a lion and out with a party. March seems to have been party central at Schnack, so we wanted to thank everyone who has had a party at Schnack in the last few weeks.

Thinking of having a party? Ideally, for any group between 8 and 25 people we have great deals starting at $20.00 per person for 2 hours (all you can eat and drink!). It's more expensive but you can also close down Schnack for a totally private party up to 75 people.

Kids Parties

Kids parties will soon be offered at Schnack. These will be pre-priced parties with a variety of themes. There is a broad range of prices, options, and themes, from balloons and food at Schnack to cooking parties, drawing parties with local cartoonist Eric Cherry, and electronic adventures for all ages at CyberXpress. If you're currently planning a party for any child from age 8 to 16 and would like to talk to our party planner please give us a call at 718 855 2879.

New Year's

You might think it's a bit late to be talking about New Year's... BUT with Spring almost in the air let's think back to those nice cold windy days of winter..

There's a nice write-up on us in NY Newsday Bargain Bites... but they did get the dog wrong. We use Stahl-Meyer.

"Schnack. Don't, for heaven's sake, call it junk food. Those hot dogs come from Niman Ranch, after all. And what could be more sublime than the mini-burgers capped with cheese? Dine In Brooklyn

When Time Out New York predicted that Manhattan was the NEXT Brooklyn, it really set the tone for those of us who really feel Brooklyn isn't some part of NYC that, "you don't go to."  For many of us, Brooklyn is the most interesting part of NYC -- Where we live, work, play and hmmm Eat!

For those in the know, Brooklyn has been part of NYC since the boroughs came together in 1898. So it's no surprise that when Brooklyn "City Hall" put together a "dining" program, the price per meal has been set to $18.98.  Now, that's a great price to pay for a 3-course meal, except of course if your're at Schnack where, well, that doesn't just buy a meal, it buys a feast!

So keeping with our "Schnack" tradition of putting our own spin on things, the $18.98 special at Schnack will be a meal for TWO; it will include everything from beer to coffee.

It isn't final, but what we are considering is:

2 Med Schwags or 2 Cokes
6 Singles with Cheese
Onion Rings (the best in NYC!)
Small Fries
Warm Banana Chocolate Bread Pudding or a Schnack style Brownie
Tea or Coffee for two

Specials

We have four main specials running. The longest running special is our sauteed greens with garlic. We have Thai Turkey fingers, and we also have Smoked Chicken, both of which have been well recieved. The newest addition is some St. Louis style Pork Ribs cooked Texas BBQ Style (sez Alan).

The big one year for Schnack will happen on April 3rd!!

Spring is in the air

Spring is in the air and we are finally getting walkers again, rather than just drivers coming to Schnack. It's not so rare these days to talk to a table and find out they walked 10 or 20 blocks or more to get to Schnack!

We are planning some St. Paddy's Day fare, but nothing special in the brew department since our prices allow you to celebrate any day!

Thanks to Newsday for putting in a review of us in the Jan 16 '04 issue.

"Schnack. The same folks who dreamed up the long-running summertime hit, the Gowanus Yacht Club put together this year-round shrine to classic diner food. The burgers are fine, and you can mix and match them pretty much any way you want to. The Wednesday night $2 beer and mini-burger is a deal. (122 Union Street; 718-855-2879)"

Food Food Food

Back again this weekend are the Thai Turkey Fingers! As a rather natural by-product of de-boning a bunch of turkeys, we also have Turkey Noodle Soup. One of our regular soups is also available, Split Pea and Ham.

We thinking about putting the Thai Turkey Fingers on the regular menu, so please come in and if you have them, let us know what you think!!

New menu

We are working on a new menu here at Schnack. We are not sure what will be added or taken away, but we are fairly sure that the squid and the extra spicy jubliat sausage will go (but both will also be back from time to time as specials.).

Today's Special

We are currently running a char-grilled 4 oz piece of white meat chicken on French bread with lettuce, tomato, pesto, and ricotta for $6.50.
The soup of the day is Lentil.

Valentine's Day

We are not yet sure exactly what we are offering as a Valentine's Day Special (VDS), but we are planning two of them. Both “meals for two.” Probably one on the low end with Schnackies and Dogs and another featuring one of our plates or even some new dish that Alan “Cookin’ in Brooklyn” is working on.

Tie a Knot

Few things in life are as complex as the interaction that leads to attraction between the sexes; The little glance that leads to a date that leads to marriage. Of course, just having a wedding today can be rather elaborate, but never shy about getting things going early, many couples have elaborate engagement events. I'm not talking about the parties for the recently engaged, but rather the twists and turns that many couples go through when preparing to "ask the question."

We had a couple who are fond customers of Schnack who on this very day have woven us into their engagement tale...

The twists and turns in this case was a hunt of clues and answers that led the would be, yet unsuspecting, bride to be on a bit of hunt. At Schnack she had to order some special special. Something the Groom had written out and posted on the specials board. Ryan, the groom said, "I wanted her to go to each place we had great memories together, and Schnack happens to be one of the best. It all lead up to me and an engagement ring." Of course she said, "yes."

They thank Schanck for letting us be part of the riddle that brought them together.

Of course we thank them for letting us be a part of their lives.

Pippin

Two Schnack regulars Joseph Clark and Kevin Scott Collins are appearing in a productions of Pippin at Columbia School of the Arts Theatre. It's running from Feb 18 to 21. It's $15 general admission. Call the box office at 212-870-6784 for more details.
